Async Doesn’t Make Your System Fast but Honest
A lot of teams adopt asynchronous programming because they expect it to make their systems faster.
- More throughput.
- Better scalability.
- Less waiting.
Sometimes that happens, but not for the reasons people think.
In practice, async doesn’t magically speed things up.
What it really does is remove the illusion of performance.
Async makes your system honest.
What “async” actually means here
When I say async, I don’t mean a specific language feature or framework. I mean systems where:
- work doesn’t block a thread while waiting on I/O,
- many requests can be “in flight” at the same time,
- progress is driven by events, callbacks, or an event loop.
Async is about how systems wait, not how fast they compute.
It lets you overlap waiting (network, disk, database), but it doesn’t remove the cost of the work itself or make slow dependencies disappear.
Async removes the hiding places
In synchronous systems, latency hides easily.
- Threads block.
- Requests queue up.
- The system feels “fine” until it suddenly isn’t.
Async changes that dynamic.
When everything is non-blocking, the slow parts have nowhere to hide:
- database queries that take longer than expected
- downstream services that occasionally stall
- shared resources that quietly serialize work
Async doesn’t create these problems — it surfaces them.

Concurrency reveals bottlenecks and it doesn’t fix them
A common misconception is that async equals parallelism.
It doesn’t.
Async allows you to wait efficiently, not to do unlimited work at once.
If you:
- have a small database connection pool,
- rely on a slow external API,
- or share a constrained resource,
async will simply let more requests reach that bottleneck faster.
The result often looks like:
- rising latency instead of blocking,
- growing queues instead of thread exhaustion,
- timeouts instead of deadlocks.
- …
This isn’t failure. it’s visibility.
A simple example
Imagine an async API with:
- 100 concurrent requests
- a database pool of 10 connections
- a query that takes ~200 ms
Async doesn’t fix this. It just allows all 100 requests to arrive immediately.
The result isn’t higher throughput but it’s 90 requests waiting, latency growing linearly under load, and the bottleneck become impossible to ignore.
Async forces you to think about limits
Once a system goes async, uncomfortable questions appear:
- How many requests are allowed in flight?
- What happens when dependencies are slower than input?
- Where does backpressure live?
- Which operations should fail fast?
- …
Synchronous systems can postpone these decisions.
Async systems demand answers.
That’s why teams often experience instability right after an async migration. It’s not because async is fragile, but because the system is finally telling the truth.
Async doesn’t remove bottlenecks.
It removes your ability to pretend they aren’t there.
Backpressure is the real lesson
The most valuable thing async teaches isn’t syntax or performance tricks.
It’s backpressure.
If you don’t explicitly decide:
- how much work is allowed in the system,
- where to slow things down,
- and when to say “no”,
the system will decide for you and guess what? usually at the worst possible moment.
Async doesn’t eliminate the need for limits. It makes their absence impossible to ignore.
Fast systems aren’t clever — they’re bounded
The fastest and most reliable systems I’ve worked on weren’t the most “advanced”.
They were boring in very specific ways:
- explicit timeouts
- bounded queues
- predictable retry behavior
- clear ownership of shared resources
- good observability around saturation
Async fits naturally into that kind of design.
It doesn’t replace it.
The real benefit of async
Async doesn’t make your system fast.
It makes it understandable under load.
It turns vague performance problems into concrete questions.
It forces trade-offs to be explicit.
It rewards teams that respect limits and punishes those that don’t.
If your system became unstable after going async, that’s not a sign you made a mistake. It’s a sign you’re finally seeing how it actually behaves.
Remember: reliability starts with honesty.
